Pandemic and injury presenting at BC Children’s Hospital Emergency department, CHIRPP data Atousa Zargaran
TEAM: Dr Shelina Babul, Dr Ian Pike, Dr. Ran Goldman, Kate Turcotte, Atousa Zargaran How are child and youth injuries being affected by the COVID-19 crisis? Given the social distancing and stay-at-home requirements, coupled with the closure of schools, playgrounds, and sports and recreation facilities, this presentation will describe the shift in the profile of child and youth injuries requiring medical treatment. Injuries are the most significant threat to the health of Canadian children and youth and a leading cause of hospitalization. Approximately one-fifth to one-quarter of ED cases seen at BCCH are due to injury. This presentation will: • Compare the total number of visits and visits due to an injury at the BC Children’s Hospital Emergency department for 2018 and 2020 • Illustrate the trends of type, cause and location of injuries. Identify pandemic-related concerns raised by families
