Dr. Shannon Russell - Integrating SARS CoV-2 genomics into BC's COVID-19 public health response
The BCCDC Public Health Laboratory, together with UBC, has sequenced over 3000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from BC COVID-19 cases. To validate the utility of viral enomics as a tool to support COVID-19 outbreak detection, we conducted a cross-validation exercise using whole-genome sequence data and epidemiological metadata. We evaluated the concordance and discordance of cases belonging to SARS-CoV-2 genetic clades with those that were epidemiologically-linked to reported outbreaks. We used the results of this analysis to define an appropriate genetic clade cut-off to support integrated surveillance of COVID-19 in the future. Generating genomics data and integrating epidemiological data in near-real-time, can support rapid public health responses during the pandemic.
