Thinking beyond resistance: assessing the knock-on effects of antibiotic stewardship - NOV 26th Grand Rounds

Talk summary: Dr Lishman will present the results of her PhD thesis which investigated the effect of antibiotic prescribing guideline adherence for urinary tract infections in primary care on the risk of subsequent UTI-related bloodstream infections. She will also share an overview of her current study plans looking at infant antibiotic exposure and childhood asthma and atopic disease risk. She will discuss how utilizing the power of population-based administrative data and data linkage allows for such large-scale studies to be run and how all of these projects fall within the realm of broadening our assessment of antibiotic stewardship and “thinking beyond resistance”. Bio: Having completed her MSc at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Control of Infectious Diseases and her PhD at Imperial College London in Clinical Medicine Research, Hannah has come back to her hometown of Vancouver to take up a UBC postdoctoral position in the Community Antimicrobial Stewardship team at BCCDC. She has spent the last several years working with UK national datasets to model the effects of antibiotic stewardship on subsequent downstream infection risk.
