Promoting Safety and Equity in Chaos:​ A feasibility study of peer support workers to support people who use drugs in emergency departments​ - Emma Uphill, Tiffany Chiu

VGH’s emergency department (ED) implemented a peer support worker (PSW) program for patients who use substances in November 2024. A key part of the program’s evaluation centres Indigenous patient voices through culturally safe engagement. We are holding storytelling sessions and a sharing circle to understand Indigenous experiences with the PSW program and incorporate improvements to better meet Indigenous peoples’ needs. This work is led by Indigenous leaders, grounded in respectful partnerships, and guided by Indigenous protocols, thereby contributing to decolonizing health research. Community feedback directly informs more culturally safe, community-driven ED care for Indigenous peoples.
