Annual influenza update: observations from 2018/19; implications for 2019/20
Dr. Skowronski will present her annual update on influenza virus and vaccine effectiveness monitoring, including observations from the 2018/19 season and implications for 2019/20. In particular, she will present recent observations and the proposed hypothesis of imprint-regulated effect of vaccine (I-REV), including potential immunological mechanisms, proposed investigations and possible solutions. Bio: With more than 160 related publications, Dr. Skowronski is an internationally-recognized expert on influenza and Lead of the Influenza and Emerging Respiratory Pathogens team at the British Columbia Centre for Disease control (BCCDC). She is credited with co-development of the test-negative design, a methodology now used globally to monitor seasonal influenza vaccine effectiveness. Her work has led to paradigm shifting observations and understanding of the complex immuno-epidemiological influences on influenza vaccine performance.
