Chee Oahut – Quet Nsayka Tillicum: Co-creating self-collection kits for sexually transmitted and bloodborne infection (STBBI) testing with Indigenous communities Samantha Rowe
STBBI testing is a core part of STBBI prevention strategy, yet undiagnosed infections remain high among Indigenous people. Many, especially in rural and remote areas, face limited access due to systemic racism, colonial policies, and health system and geographic factors. This Indigenous-led project partnered with six communities and Indigenous-serving organizations, hosting a 3-day community discussion group to co-develop STBBI self-collection kits. Participants called for discreet, stigma-free kits with full testing, traditional medicines, harm reduction tools, and culturally grounded guidance. Feedback is now shaping a pilot with BCCDC and the Public Health Lab to bring into communities.
