Measuring Multimorbidity: A Multi-Faceted Approach in BC

Presenter: Dr. Jennifer Ferris (she/her) is a postdoctoral CIHR Health Systems Impact Fellow at the Gerontology Research Center at SFU, doing embedded research with the BCCDC Data and Analytics Services and the BC Observatory for Population and Public Health with Dr. Kate Smolina. Her postdoctoral work examines chronic disease multimorbidity, with an eye to enhancing public health surveillance of multimorbidity in BC. Summary: Chronic disease research and surveillance have historically operated with a single disease lens. However, chronic diseases often do not occur in isolation; when two or more diseases develop in an individual this state is called “multimorbidity”. The goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive approach to measuring multimorbidity in the BC population using linked administrative data from the BC Chronic Disease Registry and BC Cancer Registry. This presentation will describe the analytic approaches taken to analyzing patterns of disease co-occurrence in multimorbidity, including disease counts, disease combinations, and a network-based disease clustering analysis.
