Equity Indicators in BC Health Geography: Replication, Methodological Insights, and Truth & Reconciliation - Binay Adhikari
Truth and reconciliation, diversity, equity, and inclusion are foundational values and commitments at PHSA (including BCCDC). These values require a commitment to the Thee Eat (truth) of colonialism and settler colonialism, both past and on-going, and how they have shaped the control over knowledge production, extraction, and discourse used to discuss health outcomes for Indigenous communities. In this ongoing effort, we examine two frequently used equity indicators (the Material and Social Deprivation Index and the Canadian Index of Multiple Deprivation) in the context of Truth and Reconciliation, and BC Health Geography (Community Health Service Area). This work is a step towards unlearning and undoing harm perpetuated through status quo practices in public health decision-making.
